How to prepare a bathtub
This text describes how to prepare the bathtub for the application of EKOPEL 2K bathtub coating.
Preparing the surface of the bathtub is a very important step in the process of coating the bathtub. Proper adherence to the instructions significantly impacts the adhesion of the new coating to the original surface. If the bathtub is not thoroughly cleaned and completely dried, the new coating may later peel off. Additionally, cleaning the bathtub is a straightforward process that anyone can easily manage.
You will need the following items for preparation:
- Cleaning sponge or brush
- Waterproof sandpaper (included in the set)
- Cutter
- Microfiber cloth
- Paper towels
- Cleaning agent (included in the set)
- Baking soda
- Painter's tape
- Protective foil, paper, or old newspapers
- Epoxy or polyester filler for deep chips
Once you have everything at hand, you can begin.
First, you should clean the entire area of the bathtub. Remove all shampoo bottles and similar items. Shower curtains or covers should also be removed. Set up your workspace as comfortably as possible. Ensure that all faucets are tightly closed and not dripping. Also, avoid the formation of condensation on pipes and fixtures. After treating the bathtub and before the applied material is completely dry, the tub must not become wet or damp under any circumstances.
If the bathtub has been previously painted, the old paint layer that is peeling off must be removed. This can be done with a metal scraper, knife, and sandpaper. You also need to remove silicone, rust, dirt, and limescale deposits. Silicone at the edges of the bathtub can be removed with a utility knife. The cleaning agent included in the set is suitable for removing rust, dirt, and limescale deposits. If residues remain, they should be removed with sandpaper.
Then, you should clean the bathtub again with baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes residues of acidic cleaning agents. Finally, rinse the bathtub thoroughly with plenty of warm but not hot water to avoid steam formation. Then dry the bathtub thoroughly and completely, preferably with a microfiber cloth. Use absorbent paper (such as paper towels) to check if the bathtub is indeed dry. If there are deep chips on the walls or edges of the bathtub, you should fill them with epoxy or polyester filler and then smooth them with sandpaper.
It is recommended to place a plastic bag over the faucet and secure it with tape to prevent water from dripping into the tub. The area around the bathtub – the floor and the front of the tub – should be protected with foil or paper. The tiles along the perimeter should be taped with painter's tape, which should be removed immediately after applying the product. Now the bathtub is prepared for treatment.
Thank you for reading this text to the end. After following the procedure described here, your bathtub will be perfectly prepared for further work.
And you can enjoy the new coating for many years to come.
